Boston University is proud to announce that we will be test optional for first-year applicants applying for fall 2021 and spring 2022.

We understand that your juniors will be especially impacted by this shifting landscape as they embark on their college search. The cancellation of SAT and ACT test administrations combined with the suspension of on-campus visitation programs will make the college search quite different than that of preceding classes. By going test optional, BU hopes to do our part to minimize the heightened stress around standardized testing that your students are experiencing at this time.

While the admissions process at Boston University has always been holistic and decisions have never been solely based on one single factor, such as an SAT or ACT score, the move to test optional for fall 2021/spring 2022 will allow us to add further weight to the important qualities and characteristics that focus more on the student, and their academic and personal accomplishments.
Here are some important facts for you to know:

    • This is a temporary, one-year change to BU's standardized testing policy for students applying for admission in fall 2021/spring 2022 and one which will be re-evaluated in the spring of 2021.
    • This policy applies to all undergraduate schools and colleges at Boston University and all scholarship programs.
    • Applicants will have the option to indicate whether they would like for us to consider their standardized test scores when they apply.
    • International students still will be required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS test as the primary means for evaluating English-language proficiency.

Somethings to know about the SAT since it changed in 2016:

According to www.mycollegeguide.org 2015 Sophomore editions / Northern Region magazine:

    The “re-designed SAT” will offer:
1 - Real-life vocabulary words which will focus on “relevant” words in context.
2 - OPTIONAL essay. Currently it’s required, however, I recommend you still opt to do the essay, since we do not know what schools will require or use it. Essays will analyze a passage rather than argue a point based on knowledge or personal experiences.
3 - Famous passages – Exams will ask questions involving specific passages from one of the founding documents (Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights) or the “The Great Global Conversation (like Gandhi’s talks on non-violence or Dr. King’s “I have a Dream” speech).
4Paper and digital form – we are unsure how digital forms will be delivered.
5New score scale – Scoring will change from 2400 top score to 1600 with a separate score for optional essay.
6Data Analysis – students will identify and correct inconsistencies between text and data.
7No points off for incorrect answers.
8No-calculator section – calculators will only be allowed on certain portions of the math section.
9Scientific and historical courses – questions will include charts, graphs, passages that you’ve probably seen before in history, careers, and science.
10- Evidence based reading and writing – students will be required to cite passages that best reflect the answers they chose.
11Narrower math topics – The new math section will draw from fewer, more relevant math subjects such as linear equations, proportional reasoning, and linear functions.

The new test is expected to better reflect questions and information that applies to real life.
