Athletic Eligibility

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) has very specific rules concerning athletic eligibility of students transferring from one school district to another. For example, students leaving the eighth grade at D.H.H. Lengel Middle School or All Saints in Pottsville would be able to enroll in either Pottsville Area High School or Nativity B.V.M. High School at the start of their freshman year without any penalty. However, a subsequent transfer from where they begin the ninth grade to another school district could result in a one-year loss of eligibility.

The rules regarding transfers are lengthy and complex. Parents of any student considering a transfer between school districts may contact the Athletic Directors or the principals of the schools involved for answers to their specific questions.

To be eligible for interscholastic competition at PAHS/DHHL, students must meet these PIAA criteria:

  1. On a weekly basis, must be passing four (4) major subjects, however, cannot be failing three (3) or more.
  2. At the end of each grading period and semester, must be passing four (4) major subjects, however, cannot be failing two (2) or more.
  3. Not be absent more than twenty (20) days the preceding semester.

Any student absent from school may NOT participate in any after school practice or activity for that day. Exceptions to this rule must have prior approval from the principal. In addition, all student-athletes must be in school before 9 a.m. to be eligible for a practice or event. This is waived if the lateness has been approved. (i.e. doctor appointment).

Eligibility of each student-athlete will be checked weekly. If there are any questions regarding athletic eligibility, contact Athletic Director.
